This works amazingly well in some free software called Deshake for Virtualdub. Some have advanced features that can look ahead or behind in the video and see what is off the frame at other times and copy those extra parts into the video. Cropping the image down is recommended, but you can also turn that feature off in most of the stabilizers if you really do not want to give up that frame size. The only real way to stabilize is to move the image and that causes the corners to get moved into blackness. The same with 'track motion' in after effects. For instance the 'default' option for warp stabilizer is 'stabilize, crop, auto size' but you can set it to 'stabilize only'. I think you will find most stabilizers can do this. I am happy to sacrifice the "padding" around the edges of the final cropped output - it is shot with that in mind.
All the examples I have seen on YouTube show a lower-quality image as the final output is the same resolution as the input. So the extra resolution of the Full HD file is used to stabilise the final output of the 720 File. For example I shoot in 1080 FullHD and want a stabilised 720HD "crop" output. I am looking for the option to output a lower resolution video which is stabilised. The V4 0-255 stabilized result is more "photo like" quality and the fine color nyances of nature (greens in grass or reds of autumn) are preserved better. When 255 levels are converted to 220 levels (v3) there seems to be some leveling and compressing of subtle color tones. I found when I watched my same Gh4 0-255 nature videos stabilized by v3 and v4 the difference is quite big. The new Mercalli v4 still stabilizes GH4 videos nicely and without converting levels from 0-255 to 16-235 like the previous version v3. I just watched my friends Nikon V1 handheld videos and those were very stable and no need for post stab. Very frustrating to mess with stab programs. Own settings with batch are slow because I must first let the Mercalli analyze all the clips and then assign the own setting to all clips. Advanced CMOS settings are so slow that I have not used those yet. Auto works fine but crops a bit too much. I have used something like 35/35& pan and roll and 100% best stabilation but it is not very good still yet. It is time consuming to tweak so that my bad lens OIS (Pana 14-140mm v2) vibration goes away but it still crops as little as possible. I have tested the auto batch setting and few own settings. I can not say much about stab IQ, I just started using it. There are also new stab features with very slow analysing but those are optional. There are some new features like NR/sharpening and clip combining. Rendering is still about the same than earlier and the bitrate goes easily very high with complex scene.
It is funny because when I asked them earlier about it (v3) they said that the issue not exists but they have now corrected it silently. The luminance shift 0-255 to 16-235 is corrected (hurray). There is still not a possibility to save settings. I can now stabilize many clips with assigning the same settings to all files. Now I have tested the demo version of new Mercalli. Changes luminance levels of original 0-255 video Not enough rendering option for bitrate (makes too small or too high bitrate) I wonder if they has fixed the most annoying issues in previous version Version 4 is now out, with additional improvements.
